An open source kit selling company, Adafruit Industries, has recently set a competition offering $1000 to anyone who could develop a set of open source drivers for Kinect. And when Microsoft voiced its disapproval Adafruit increased the bounty to $2000 and then even to $3000. Hector Martin was the first to successfully complete the challenge; in fact he got Kinect working on his Linux laptop using Open GL in just three hours after its launch. Hector also who says that he is going to spend the prize money on more impressive hacking equipment to continue his work. Adafruit now view this as a starting point for the creativity to flow. Kinect has been opened up for the masses to experiment with. And they are expecting robots, art, science, and education projects to start popping up. The possible uses of such a device on a PC are literally open ended, including anything from somewhat amusing games to full control of computer reminiscent of certain sci-fi film classics.
